Guys, if you want me to start writing a dissertation on Engineer strategies, I can totally do that. But that would be a hijack of the thread

It's supposed to be about pyro's and soldier's

The true answer is there is no real way to stay alive. You will always be encountering different situations where some strategies that may work in other situations do not apply. There are many different ways to play each class, and everyone is different, so you will never really know what to expect or how different people will react. One thing I try to do when I am a soldier is to always try and keep in the air. By rocket jumping into the air, you are not only accelerating and moving in all sorts of different directions, but you are becoming a smaller target. Every shot needs to count because 2 or 3 rocket jumps and your just about out of health. I really like to use this strategy with demo, and sticky jump into the air over a bunch of people on the Payload cart, unload stickies on them as fast as I can and just detonate them. It works exceptionally well because most often they do not know you are right above their head, and if you get a crit they are toast. Just make sure to stand behind the bushes when your launching yourself. As for pyro, I am rather unexperienced with that class. One thing I think is a great tool to use that you should learn to use is the reflector. It has saved me dozens of times. The pyro, being a low health class, is extremely vulnerable with head-on or even flanking tactics. It operates best soley on suprise and ambush. Maps such as Gold Rush and Badwater have a few, confined spaces that you should seek out, hide in and wait for the moment. The backburner is more appropriate for this situation. I find that the reflector is more inspiring of my head-on style of playing, and that is why I most often use it. Beware though, as it will not reflect bullets, so unless your attacking a soldier or demo, it is usually best to get out of there. I hoped this helps. I play a lot more heavy, than pyro or soldier, but that is a completely different animal and is best left for another day.

Hunk, staying alive is a real good way to help your team win, but there are a few classes on our servers that don't need to worry about staying alive. I worry about winning. If your on blu and have good engineers, you need to worry about moving that line forward. We generally have 3 second respawns... so who care if you die?

When I play pyro on offense, I consider it my job to just keep pushing the line as far as I can go especially on a payload map. I really don't worry about dying. My job is to keep the engineers pissed off and off balanced so that we can keep moving the payload. This is especially true in Badwater. I move as far forward as quickly as I can. You know where the engineers are going to set up. Get to those areas quickly and burn them up.

On defense, a pyro's job is more of the same, just in reverse. Don't let them put down those sentries. Keep the lines unstable so that they can not get a footing. While death is bad, a level 3 sentry is much worse. Get those engineers first. I often run right into a group knowing death is imminent, but I make sure to get the engineers and medics. Stop the ubers and sentries. Making a medic pop that uber prior to the front lines is your job.

As a blu medic, get your uber and die when it ends. Who cares, 3 sec and your back. Just keep pushing. This is especially true if you have a good demo who is taking care of SG's. If you know the demo is skilled, you die to make sure he gets the job done. If you can hop out, then fine. Just don't pick a bad demo to uber, lol.

I've just run into too many folks who guard the kill:death ratio way too too much. They won't do what is right for the team fearing death. Our servers generally don't penalize you too much for death, so my general opinion is don't worry about that ratio at all on our servers.

I think that there has been some great advice here. My advice is to use these tactics to help complete a strategy, not to guard a ratio. The folks who have posted here are all about the win, never forget that. It's nice to hold a great kill:death ration, but it's even better to be known as a winning player ( in my opinion).

If our respawn times were stock, then the death event is something that can really change things big time. I have no intention in changing them anytime soon. People generally love the action. I know I do.

I could not agree more with that statement! It is soooooo frustrating to see your team loose because some people play it safe, don't move up and rather do some random spamming from a distance because they fear to die. These are the glorious battles where I destroy Suicide's sentry gun on the exact same spot for the 10th time and by the time I am back she is already rebuilding her stuff because the team is rather hiding in the back than moving up into the courtyard, pushing forward and making sure we actually make some progress.

Another of my favourites is when we loose because people rather start shooting the players that are making the capture the point instead of jumping onto the point, interupting the capturing process and buying the team some valuable seconds.

So a big HURRAY for all the brave players that sacrifice their kill/death ratio, rush onto the front line and die for the greater good! The real heroes of TF2.

Cheers
