Actually you can notice a big difference with experienced engineers =)

being engineer isnt as easy as you think

this.

I have clocked in *many* hours in being an engineer. I have to be around 200+ (Which is saying alot when i started playing in august)

There is a huge difference in being an engineer and being a GOOD engineer. Mainly learning how to stay alive. And swinging your wrench. And sentry placement! Your body is weak, but not your machines!

Being a good engineer not as hard as being a good soldier or a good demoman, but the skillset involved is much, much different! If you thought your shotgun was lame as a secondary weapon, try killing people with a pistol instead

...

I'm getting off topic though. Everything that everyone has said previously is good to use. Have lots of friends (who don't mind playing medic) and a good mic and you should be set

Yeah, that's a downer. Spies and ubers.

Spies you can usually notice though, you have to be constantly suspicious and look around. Occasionally they'll get you...but you just go to a different spot.

When it comes to ubers, well...it usually doesnt end well. But if you notice the stickies in time, you can always survive and live to fight another day I can usually get an average of 3-5 kills per sentry before it's taken out by a demo, soldier or occasionally a pyro

A 200 hour engineer vs a 20 hour engineer...you wont see much difference

I am with Kirby and Suicide on this one! An experienced engineer can make all the difference. The more experienced an engineer is the better he knows how to quickly get his stuff up, where to best put the sentry guns to maximize damage while still remain at a pretty covered position, in which directions the sentries should face (I am still convinced that at least 50% of all players that play engineer from time to time don't know that they can rotate the stuff with right click ... especially true for the millions of teleporter exist that face in the direction of a wall and leave you disoriented at first moment), where dispensers are needed to support the front line (we also have a mod installed that allows engineers to drop their metal on right click when selecting the wrench ... still only the most experienced engies use it to their and the teams advantage), where the teleportes are save and still near the front line, and how to react when a spy is lurking around.

You will also see the difference when you have fast moving front lines and your engineer is constantly moving up with your progress when it come to teleporters or sentrys that secure the area.

What I found most useful for being engineer is playing the offense classes. You will quickly find out about the potential weak points of your sentry guns and can make the respective changes (e.g. by letting your gun face in a different direction to increase its speed to lock onto targets coming from areas that pose a threat to your stuff).

Cheers

I'm not taking anything away from the career engineers because there are engineers who consistently perform at the top of their game...building teleporters FIRST, having good spots for sentries, and being able to use your shotgun effectively.

So i still stand on my statement...I believe a 200 hour engineer IS better than a 20 hour....but the skill gap between a 200 hour soldier and a 20 hour is much larger

P.S: I tip my hat off to those who play the class for more than 10 minutes lol. I CANT STAND DYING
